MOOSE JAW BRIEF:
Moose Jaw, is situated at the junction of Thunder Creek and the Moose Jaw River.
The true origin of Moose Jaw's name is still unknown. According to the Geographical Board of Canada, Moose Jaw's name was derived from the Moose Jaw Creek reached by Captain Palliser on September 16, 1857. One popular mythical legend says that the Indian word "Moosoochapiskanissippi" literally means "the river shaped like the jaw of a moose".
It is a commercial and manufacturing center situated in a productive wheat-growing region. The city's principal industries produce refined petroleum, chemicals, fertilizer, processed food, electrical appliances, steel and wood items, building materials, and clothing. Potash is mined in the area.
Moose Jaw is the site of a branch of the Western Development Museum, which contains exhibits on the history of transportation systems, and the Moose Jaw Art Museum and National Exhibition Centre, which features displays of Plains Indians artifacts.
A NATO and Canadian Forces jet pilot training base and the Sukanen Ship, Pioneer Village, and Museum are nearby.
Settled in 1882, the community grew quickly as a railroad terminus and in 1884 was incorporated as a town. Pop. (2011) 33,274.
