Nanaimo is a community that respects and preserves the environment and one that is pedestrian friendly. It is a city of social and economic opportunity that has a diverse economy and a wide range of social, recreational, cultural and artistic amenities and services.
Since the 1950s Nanaimo's economy has been based on forestry and fishing; by the 1990s, however, the predominant sectors were commerce, construction, and government, professional, and financial services.
