FORT McMURRAY BRIEF:
Fort McMurray has deep roots in Alberta history. The Athabasca and Clearwater rivers which provide
the beautiful natural setting for today's residential subdivisions were once an attraction to fur traders and adventurers.
Trader and explorer Peter Pond was one of the first to write about the potential of Athabasca country following his travels to this area in the 1770s and 80s. First the site of a North West Company post, Fort McMurray was rebuilt in 1870 as a Hudson's Bay Company post and renamed for its factor, William McMurray.
While the oil sands plants are major employers, residents are also engaged in a wide cross section of professions and occupations. For the past two decades, this area has had a high labour participation rate and, as the region's largest community.
Even with explosive demands for housing and services. The city's success in meeting those challenges is evident today. Attractive residential subdivisions, a well planned commercial core and industrial parks and a full range of cultural amenities have created an attractive city with a strong sense of community.
Surrounded by unparalleled opportunities for recreation and outdoor pursuits, residents see Fort McMurray as an excellent place to live, raise families...and retire.
