Registering for a PEI Health Card
You may apply for coverage by completing a registration form available from Health PEI, medical clinics, hospitals or a physicians office. When your application has been approved, you will receive a health care card. You must present your health care card to the physician and/or hospital each time you require insured services. The card proves that you are eligible and contains information needed by hospitals and physicians.

Medical Clinics
For non-urgent care, visit a walk-in clinic nearest you if you do not have a family doctor or if your medical needs cannot wait until you can arrange an appointment with your doctor. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, you should call 9-1-1 or go to the nearest Emergency Department.
Department of Health and Wellness
The Ministry of Health and and Wellness is comprised of the Department of Health and Social Services and the five health authorities including the four health regions (West Prince Health, East Prince Health, Queens Health, Kings Health), and the Provincial Health Services Authority.
Community Health Centres
Health centres bring together family physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and other providers who collaborate to deliver first point of contact services to residents in certain areas of the province within the health system. Principle clients are individuals and families within the geographic area that are registered with a centre for primary care services.

Health Care in Canada

Health Care Insurance plans have basic similarities across the country including coverage of medically necessary hospital services and the services of a physician, however, any further coverage varies from province to province based on additional provincial funding.
