BURLINGTON BRIEF:
Burlington is located on the north-west shore of Lake Ontario, Burlington is one of many communities that make up the Golden Horseshoe on the Niagara Peninsula in southern Ontario, Canada.
With a population of over 176,000, Burlington is one of four municipalities that make up the Regional Municipality of Halton. Burlington is at the western end of the Greater Toronto area, and is just an hour north of the USA border.
Halton Region, incorporated in 1974 by the Province of Ontario, is comprised of four municipalities: The City of Burlington and the Towns of Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville. The Town of Oakville and the City of Burlington make up the urban area to the south, and the Towns of Halton Hills and Milton make up the largely rural area to the north
Burlington takes its name from the distinctive rolling accents of the Scottish settlers who arrived here in the early nineteenth century when it was a small town of 3,500 acres known as Brant's Block.
It was named after Captain Joseph Brant, a man with a vision of commerce and industry. In 1794 he settled in what is today downtown Burlington. Many distinctive heritage buildings remain in the area, providing a link to the community's past.
Brant's Burlington is a far cry from today's network of merchants and manufacturers shipping sophisticated products such as aerospace components across the border to the U.S., designing global position systems and managing billions of dollars in mutual funds.
