HAMILTON CITY BRIEF:Hamilton, a place where you can discover services and facilities that make the city one of the most attractive places to live, work and visit. To the rest of the country it's still steel town, but these days a lot of Torontonians look to make Hamilton home to avoid the high prices and long commutes of Toronto. It might be more aptly nicknamed cerebral city. Contrary to popular belief outside the Golden Horseshoe, the city's not all Tiger Cats, Stelco and Copps Coliseum. The accent on brain over brawn is due in part to groups like the non-profit Hamilton and Region Arts Council, dedicated to elevating artists and art lovers alike. Hamilton residents get started on culture early in life thanks to outfits like The Great Big Theatre Company, a community-based children's theatre group producing professional-quality performances. Serious writers looking for an erudite quote may want access to McMaster University, home of the scholarly study of Bertrand Russell, British philosopher and peace advocate. The Bertrand Russell Archives came to the university library in 1968 -- two years before Russell's death at the age of 98. One thing is clear, as home to both a beloved Canadian Football League team, the Hamilton Tiger Cats and a philharmonic orchestra, Hamilton seems to live up to Russell's advice that one should have a general attitude of welcoming to everybody. The Region of Hamilton-Wentworth has earned a reputation for being a very environmentally friendly. Hamilton's Green Venture promotes sustainable living and is active in schools and provides Energy Audit services and much more. Greater Hamilton belongs to the geographical area known as the Niagara Escarpment - a feature that stretches some 700 kilometres - from Niagara Falls to Tobermory. In 1990, the United Nations proclaimed the Niagara Escarpment an UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. |
