Hamilton residents get started on culture early in life thanks to outfits like The Great Big Theatre Company, a community-based children's theatre group producing professional-quality performances.

Serious writers looking for an erudite quote may want access to McMaster University, home of the scholarly study of Bertrand Russell, British philosopher and peace advocate. The Bertrand Russell Archives came to the university library in 1968 -- two years before Russell's death at the age of 98

One thing is clear: as home to both a beloved Canadian Football League team and a philharmonic orchestra, Hamilton seems to live up to Russell's advice that "One should have a general attitude of welcoming to everybody."

The Region of Hamilton-Wentworth has earned a reputation for being a "Green" Region. Greater Hamilton belongs to the geographical area known as the Niagara Escarpment - a feature that stretches some 700 kilometres - from Niagara Falls to Tobermory. In 1990, the United Nations proclaimed the Niagara Escarpment an UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
